Virginia Brain & Head Injury Lawyers Help Victims and Their Families
Representing those who have suffered concussions and TBI
Head injuries should always be taken seriously because the brain is the most important organ in the body and much more fragile than most people think. Like any other body part, it can bruise. It can also be damaged by pressure or sudden motion. Many head injuries result in permanent or long-term damage. At The Law Office of Jeremiah A. Denton III, our attorneys represent Virginia Beach head injury victims and their families. Our firm prides itself on taking hard cases against large and intimidating defendants. Whether you are seeking compensation from a trucking company, a corporation or even a school system, we will do whatever it takes to get you results.
Understanding brain injuries
There are many types and levels of brain injury. Most cases involve traumatic brain injury (TBI), meaning a brain injury caused by physical trauma. Injuries range in severity from quickly healing concussions to life-long incapacity or death from diffuse damage. Some of the common types of brain injuries include:
- Concussions. These are the most common type of head injury. Concussions cause nausea and sensitivity to light. They also bring dizziness and drowsiness. The can cause minor or major damage.
- Hematoma. This is the medical term for bleeding inside the head. When the head hits an object or an object hits the head, it can cause the brain to slam into the side of the skull. Blood vessels may burst at the point of impact. In harder impacts, the brain may bounce in the skull, causing a coup contrecoup injury with contusions both at the point of impact and the point directly opposite that where the brain rebounds after its initial impact. These injuries are often severe.
- Diffuse axonal injury (DAI). This type of damage, also known as shearing, is caused by different areas of the brain moving at different speeds due to varying densities. As the head suddenly decelerates or turns, one part of the brain slides over the other, stretching the axons in the brain and causing serious damage. Many victims who suffer DAI lose consciousness. Recovery can take months or years, progressing from coma to persistent vegetative state before the patient is able to regain consciousness. This type of injury is often deadly.
Because these injuries are rarely accompanied by obvious and long-lasting physical wounds, they are “invisible injuries.” Society does not always react well or appropriately to head trauma because people cannot see it and most people do not understand it. Our personal injury lawyers work hard to prove injuries and difficulties to a jury so that you can get the compensation you need to care for yourself or an injured family member.
Recovering legal damages for a brain injury
If you or a loved one has suffered a traumatic brain injury, a lifetime of care may be required. In addition to medical bills and physical therapy, many head injury patients will need to be looked after for life. They may need assistance with household activities and may be unable to work. Our firm helps families of brain injury victims seek and recover the compensation they need to provide the necessary care for their loved one. We handle claims against car manufacturers, drug manufacturers, property owners and anyone else who may be responsible for causing a head injury.
